A once-stray puppy explains why he barks—and how love, patience, and kindness help him thrive.

Why I Bark?
is the educational story of a once-fearful stray puppy who finds a loving home. Told from the dog’s point of view, this gentle rhyming narrative helps young readers understand the many reasons why dogs bark—often from fear, uncertainty, or a desire to protect. With humor and honesty, it encourages empathy, compassion, and respectful behavior towards pets. Perfect for animal lovers and young dog owners alike, this story reminds us that even anxious animals can flourish with patience, training, and love. The expressive illustrations add warmth, personality, and a touch of humor to every scene.

Sara Mills is an Aussie who grew up as an expat in Dubai, UAE, where she currently lives. As a child, Sara spent every birthday wishing for a dog, and all her dreams came true the day that she stumbled upon a stray puppy in 2015. Sara has a degree in Psychology from McGill University but finds that some of the most insightful lessons she’s learned in motivation and behavior were taught to her by a noisy four-legged creature.

Emanuela Carletti was born in Milan, Italy, where she still lives with her two wonderful daughters, a dog named Sally, and a cat. She loves everything to do with art, especially painting, and is passionate about her job as a children’s illustrator. Over the years, Emanuela has collaborated with many prominent international publishers.
